Dr. Adunka is an otolaryngologist specializing in otology, neurotology, and lateral skull base surgery. He holds a full-time faculty position at the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck surgery of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Adunka was born and raised in Vienna, Austria, and graduated from the University of Vienna Medical School. He then served his mandatory military service and subsequently completed his internship followed by otolaryngology residency at the J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. After graduating, he briefly stayed on as faculty but soon decided to pursue a neurotology fellowship at UNC. He completed his fellowship in 2007 and has since established his own practice.
Besides his busy clinical practice, Dr. Adunka has maintained a busy teaching and research portfolio. He is currently working on a technology that would allow to obtain real-time data on hearing preservation and hair cell function during cochlear implantation. He is also the PI, Co-PI, and Co-investigator on several clinical trials mostly involving implantable hearing technologies including conventional cochlear implantation, electric acoustic stimulation of the auditory system, middle ear implants, and future technologies.
