Biography

Dr. Michael J. Zvolensky is Richard and Pamela Ader Green and Gold Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Vermont (UVM) and Director of the Anxiety and Health Research Laboratory and Clinic. Dr. Zvolensky’s research program cuts across basic and applied work in the area of anxiety disorders. Specifically, his work is principally focused on examining vulnerability processes involved with the onset and maintenance of these disorders. He has been especially involved in better understanding the role of cigarette smoking in terms of the etiology and maintenance of panic psychopathology, and at the same time, the role panic vulnerability factors may play in smoking cessation. This work has broadly informed the study of the co-occurrence of anxiety and addictive disorders.
Dr. Zvolensky has published over 280 scientific articles (of these works, 250 are peer-review journal articles) and received a variety of contribution to the field awards from professional organizations. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institues of Health (NIH) since arriving to UVM in 2001. Dr. Zvolensky is currently Associated Editor for Cognitive Therapy and Research and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. He sits on numerous editoral boards for other journals (e.g., Behavior Therapy), has served as guest editor for five different journals (e.g., Clinical Psychology Review, Addictive Behaviors),  and is a frequent grant reviewer for national and international organizations. In total, he has reviewed for over 50 journals and 7 distinct funding agencies. Outside of these professional activities, Dr. Zvolensky was previously the Chair of the Institutional Review Board at UVM and has been a comittee member on numerous commitee organizations in the Unites States of America addressing substance use problems among the mentally ill, including the NIH consensus report on mental illness and tobacco.
 

Research Interest

Although Dr. Zvolensky′s primary research interest is in the etiology and maintenance of tobacco-anxiety, he also has a significant track record in the areas of marijuana and emotional functioning and mechainisms underlying stress and medical illness associations.
