Biography

Kate Evans joined Washington State University in 2008 as the pome fruit breeder based at the Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center, Wenatchee. Her principal role is leading the apple breeding program but she’s also collaborating nationally and internationally in developing a rootstock breeding program for pear. She was elected onto the US Rosaceae Genomics, Genetics and Breeding Executive Committee in 2011. Kate started working as an apple and pear breeder at East Malling Research, UK in 1992 following a degree in Plant Biology/Genetics from Leeds University, UK and a PhD in plant molecular biology from Durham University, UK. Whilst at EMR, she managed an internationally funded breeding program, producing apple and pear scions and rootstocks, various UK government-funded projects focused on developing techniques to improve efficiencies in breeding and germplasm management and was a UK partner in 3 EU-funded projects.
