Biography

Jawaid Haider is a Professor of Architecture at Penn State. His interdisciplinary research underscores how the designed environment can be child-friendly, elder-friendly, and provide improved intergenerational interaction and relationship formation in civic spaces. He has received many awards and recognitions; most notable are the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to Australia, College of Arts and Architecture Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching, and the Inaugural Award for Faculty Outreach “in recognition of exemplary leadership in applying scholarship in support of society.” Recently he completed as Principal Investigator a major research project, “Planning and Design Strategies for Healthy Living, Parks and Recreation in the Pottstown Area.” He has published extensively and has received other major grants for his architectural research, including grants from the National Endowments for the Arts (NEA) and the Graham Foundation. Professor Haider has lectured and offered workshops throughout the world—in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States.
 

Research Interest

His research interests include architectural issues relevant to design for children, intergenerational design, public space, architectural design education, and comparative theoretical perspectives in architecture. Recently his research interests have expanded to include active living strategies in parks and recreation systems.
