Biography

Dr. Okoli completed his BSN degree in Nursing from the University of Kentucky in 1999. He subsequently completed a Master’s in Public Health and PhD in Nursing from the University of Kentucky in 2005. From 2006-2007 he completed his Postdoctoral training through a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) funded Strategic Training Program in Tobacco Research (STPTR) administered through the University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada. From 2007 to 2009 he completed a subsequent Postdoctoral Training through the CIHR funded Intersections of Mental Health perspectives in Addictions Research (IMPART) in British Columbia, Canada. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, School of Nursing and an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. Dr Okoli is also an Investigator with the British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health. He currently has over 30 peer-reviewed articles in tobacco use addiction and policy.

Research Interest

Tobacco use initiation, dependence, and cessation in special populations (specifically adolescents, and individuals with co-morbid psychiatric disorders and substance use problems), biomarkers of tobacco use and tobacco exposure, health policies related to population-based prevention and control of tobacco use, and sex and gender based analysis of factors associated with tobacco use.
