Biography

Dr. Antonio Lonigro was born in 1964. He holds a degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD in Mediterranean Agronomy (sanitary aspects regarding the use of treated wastewater in agriculture) from the University of Bari - Italy. He works at the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of University of Bari - Italy on environmental monitoring of chemical, physical, microbiological and toxicological aqueous matrices, on soils and plants. Focused his research primarily on biological treatment of wastewater, aimed at the removal of microbial pathogens, nutrients and xenobiotics and/or resource recovery. The main research interests can be summarized as follows:
- Wastewater treatment and use in agriculture
- Advanced processes on wastewater treatment (membrane bioreactor) - Nutrients and organic xenobiotics removal processes with wastewater treatment
- Sanitary aspects related to the use of wastewater for irrigation
- Microbiological Risk Assessment on the use of wastewater
- Irrigation techniques for vegetable crops.

Research Interest

- Wastewater treatment and use in agriculture
- Advanced processes for municipal wastewaters treatment (membrane bioreactor)
- Nutrients and organic xenobiotics removal processes with wastewater treatment
- Sanitary aspects related to the use of wastewater for irrigation
- Microbiological Risk Assessment on the use of wastewater
- Study of the fate, within the soil-crop system, of emerging micropollutants, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, personal care products, and steroid hormones.
- Characterization of compost from sewage sludge
- Irrigation techniques for vegetable crops with special reference to the comparison of irrigation methods (sprinkler, drip and subsurface irrigation), irrigation variables, water consumption in function of evapotranspiration and crop coefficients, water use-efficiency, use of not conventional waters (brackish and treated wastewater).
