Biography

Alahiotis N. Stamatis, Professor in Genetics since 1988 (Biology Department, University of Patras) and director of Laboratory of Genetics. Education: Primary and secondary education in Kos-Greece, B. Sci. Biology, University of Thessaloniki-Greece (1968), Ph.D. Genetics, University of Patras-Greece (1975), Research Associate Genetics in the Dartmouth College, USA (1976-1977) and Brandeis University USA (1979). Fellowships: National Fellowships Institution (NFI) (1963-1968), Biology Department of the Dartmouth College N.H. USA (1976-77) and Brandeis University MA USA (1979). Academic appointments in the University of Patras: Research assistant (1972-1979), Lecturer of Genetics (1976-1982), Assistant Professor (1982-1984), Associate Professor (1984-1988), Professor (1988-present), Chairman Division of Genetics Dept. of Biology (1988-1989). He was also Head of the Department of Biology (1989-1994), Rector (1994-2000). He was also Head of the Hellenic Pedagogical Institute (HPI) (2000-2004). His main research interests are on the evolutionary, population, behavioral, developmental, biochemical genetics and biology and lately on biopedagogical themes. He has been used as referee in professional journals and member of editorial board in two international and two national journals. Author of three scientific textbooks, three popularized books, more than 70 original full papers in professional journals, more than 40 conference (national and international) presentations, in some of them as invited speaker. He is also author of one invited review and author of one chapter in “Isozymes: Current Topics in Biological and Medical Research” (USA). Member of Professional societies: The American Genetic Association, Genetics Society of America - INC, The Society for the Study of Evolution, Hellenic Society of Biological Sciences. He was also organizer of international and national conferences. He was member of the New York Academy of Sciences and Associate Editor in The International J. of Learning. Some additional activities: Former president (f.P.)of the scientific council of National Center Marine Research (Athens), f.P. of the Administrative Council of IHTHIKA (Institute of the General Secretary of Research and Technology of Greece), f. vice President of National Bioethics Committee of Health Ministry, f.P. local steering committee of ISTAME – A.P. (Institute of Strategic and Developmental Studies – A.P.), f. member of the National Council of Education, f. member of National Council Quality Food Control, f. member of the International Board of Maritime Healthcare (IBMH), f. member of the National Committee of Psychic (mental) health, f. member of the National Research Council. He is also implicated regularly in hundreds popularized articles and relative talks in many cities of Greece, getting various medals and symbols of recognition.
