Dr. Bruijnzeel joined the Department of Psychiatry of the College of Medicine at the University of Florida in 2004 as an Assistant Professor. He completed his doctorate in Neuropharmacology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2001 and then came to the United States for a post-doctorate fellowship at the Scripps Research Institute, in San Diego, California. While at the Scripps Institute he studied the Neuroadaptations underlying nicotine dependence. His work was funded by the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program of the State of California.
Investigating the neuronal mechanisms that mediate drug withdrawal and relapse to drug seeking behavior. He has shown that the neuropeptide CRF plays a critical role in the negative mood state associated with nicotine withdrawal and stress-induced relapse to drug seeking behavior.
