Japan is an island country in Asia. Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, has a population of 12 million people and is one of the most crowded cities in the world. Archaeological research shows that Japan was inhabited during the Upper Paleolithic period. From 12th century to 18th century, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns in the name of Emperor. Japan is well known as the “Land of Rising Sun”. Politically Japan is part of the United Nations along with other alliances such as G7, G8, and the G20.

Geography of the country:

Japan is a neighbouring country of P.R. China, North and South Korea and Russia. It has a total of 6,852 islands extending along the Pacific coast of East Asia. The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. It is the land consisting of 118 volcanoes. The climate of Japan is predominantly temperate, but varies greatly from north to south. Japan is located in the Pacific Ocean with high-rise-filled cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples.

Status of economy, research and development:

After huge suffering from atomic bombing during World War II, Japan excelled in all arenas of research and development. According to world nominal GDP computation, Japan is having third-largest economy and fourth in the world as per power purchasing parity. Japan has a large industrial capacity and technological advances enabled country to lead the world. The country is pioneer in advanced research in electronics, machinery, biomedical devices, computer science, robotics and medical sciences.

In Physics, Medicine and Chemistry, this island nation produced 21 Nobel laureates so far. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology is a Japanese national research institute for marine-earth science and technology. It was founded as Japan Marine Science and Technology Center in October 1971 and became an Independent Administrative Institution in April 2004. Researchers in Japan were more enthusiastic in publishing high quality articles Earth Science journals like Progress in Earth and Planetary Science, Earth, Planets and Space, etc.
