The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is a leading academic research association in philosophy and social sciences fields. CASS is also a national centre for widespread studies in the Peopleâs Republic of China.
CASS was established in May 1977 with the goal to support the development of science and education. Professor Hu Qiaomu was the first president of CASS and Prof. Chen Kui-yuan is the present president. Before the foundation of CASS Philosophy and Social Sciences department of Chinese academy of Sciences was composed of 14 research units and 2,200 staff members, after 1977 to 1981 many other institutions were established in CASS, now it is made up of 31 research units, more than 50 research centres and 3,767 staffs are working for it.
Allowing full play of its own benefits of having complete disciplines, plenty of capable people in the field of social sciences and humanities and being rich in materials CASS is carrying on theoretical exploration and policy studies with the aim of raising the overall level of studies.
