| Figure 1: Processing of Preproinsulin. The signal peptide sequence (23 amino acids) is removed from the N-terminus of preproinsulin by proteases. This forms three disulphide bonds producing proinsulin. Further proteolytic cleavage of proinsulin removes the C-peptide producing mature insulin. |
