Research Highlights
Thrombocytopenia in a Child

Passive transfer of platelet antibodies through blood products can result in thrombocytopenia. Conservative transfusion practices and more targeted donor screening may prevent similar events.
Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovary Hypercalcemic Type

Small cell carcinoma of the ovary hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is a rare tumor successfully treated with a combination of cisplatin-based chemotherapy and surgical resection. With aggressive multimodal therapy SCCOHT is curable in children.
Study of Catheter-Associated Bloodstream Infections

The aims of this study were to analyze the factors associated with recurrent infection and catheter removal in pediatric oncology patients. The most frequent organism isolated was coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CONS).
Treatment of Metastatic Relapse of Medulloblastoma with Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a treatment used to cure pediatric brain tumors. Patients with metastatic relapse of medulloblastoma treated with SRS achieved prolonged, progression-free survival. Tolerability of the treatment was excellent with no adverse effects reported.
Arsenic Trioxide Chemoradiotherapy for Infiltrating Astrocytomas

Phase I trial of ATO given with radiation therapy to anaplastic astrocytoma detected children. The recommended dose of ATO during conventional irradiation is 0.15 mg/kg given on a daily basis with each fraction of radiation therapy administered.
