Biography
 Research Interest :

My research area is in Cellular Microbiology, which focuses on manipulation and exploitation of the host cell biology by the two intracellular bacterial pathogens, Legionella pneumophila and Francisella tularensis. Our studies are focused on the molecular, genetic, and cellular aspects of the intracellular infection to identify bacterial virulence factors that can be used as targets for therapy and vaccination. The other intracellular pathogen we study is Francisella tularensis, which is classified as an agent of bioterrorism that causes the fatal disease tularemia. Our studies are focused on two venues; first, understanding the infection of the insect and its role in efficient transmission to humans, through the use of fruit flies as a genetically amenable model system. The second is to understand the molecular, genetic, and cellular aspects of the intracellular infection to identify bacterial virulence factors that can be used as targets for therapy and vaccination.

Vanessa Rivera Amill

Vanessa Rivera Amill
Associate Professor
Department of Microbiology
Ponce School of Medicine and Health Sciences
USA

 Biography :

Dr. Vanessa Rivera Amill has published nine peer reviewed manuscripts (five as first author and corresponding author) focusing on the relationships between viral evolution and disease progression as well as compartmentalization or other phylogenetic analysis in SIV evolution (specifically the env gene) in the rhesus macaque model of drug addiction and AIDS. She was primarily responsible for evolutionary studies linking the evolution SIV envelope gene to rapid progression to AIDS in the monkey model. Throughout these studies, she expanded her scientific background to accommodate the demands of interpreting the relationship between sequence and disease for a large, complex gene product like the SIV envelope. Furthermore, she has experience with comparison of virus in different compartments to understand how compartmentalization and loss of compartmentalization may be related to pathogenesis. This project is expected to generate preliminary data that will provide the foundation to uncover gp120 sequences associated with progression to HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND).

In contrast, lethal intestinal inflammation during schistosomiasis is suppressed by interleukin 4 and 13 dependent of M2 differentiation through a mechanism that requires expression of the L-arginine metabolic enzyme arginase I.

Department of Cancer and Cell Biology
University of Cincinnati
USA
Tel: 513-558-8691
Fax: 513-558-4454

 Biography :

Assistant Professor Angela Drew joined the department in 2004 from the University of Melbourne. The Drew laboratory investigates factors related to ovarian cancer metastasis Ovarian cancer is an insidious disease with a disproportionately high mortality rate compared with other tumor types. The Drew group focuses on inflammation and metalloproteases and their effects on tumor metastasis in vivo. The Drew laboratory is focusing specifically on membranebound metalloproteases since their earlier work has shown they are influential on ovarian cancer progression In addition the laboratory has previously shown that inflammation plays an important role in driving the spread of ovarian tumors though the mediators are still not known. Dr Drews group is using transgenic mouse approaches to determine the contribution of an inflammatory protein called interleukin6 IL6 and its receptor IL6Ra to the progression of ovarian cancer. An overall goal of the Drew laboratory is to find specific targets that can abrogate the spread of tumors in vivo. The translational direction of this work is greatly enhanced by strong collaborations with UC clinicians with expertise in gynecologic oncology and pathology. This teamwork approach provides great opportunities for viewing metastasis both broadly and specifically as a target for altering tumor prognosis.

 Biography :

Dr. Rina Aharoni completed her doctorate in immunology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel in 1990 on immunomodulation of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and its animal model Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) as well as on the mechanisms of action of Copaxone (Glatiramer acetate) in these diseases. During her Postdoc in Stanford University (1991-1994), she was the first to show that Copaxone treatment can be applied for additional immunopathological disorders, initially for Graft Versus Host Disease and later for graft rejection. When she returned to the Weizmann Institute (1995 ), her main research involves development of immunomodulatory and neuroprotective approaches and their in situ effect in the Central Nervous System, in particular, the potential for neurogenesis and remyelination. In parallel she continues to study new applications for Copaxone and recently showed its therapeutic potential for the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
