Ashim K Mitra was recently named one of two recipients for the 2007 ARVO/Pfizer Ophthalmics Translational Research Award He is the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Research for the University of MissouriKansas City August 2004 and Director of Translational Research at UMKC School of Medicine He is also the University of Missouri Curators’ Professor of Pharmacy and UMKC’s Chairman of Pharmaceutical Sciences School of Pharmacy He joined his current position after serving as an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Purdue University West Lafayette Indiana He is the author and coauthor over 250 research articles book chapters and review papers Dr Mitra is the recipient of a numbers of research awards from the National Institutes of Health the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and numerous pharmaceutical organizations He is the 1999 recipient of the University Trustee’s Faculty Research award from the University of Missouri and 1992 recipient of National Collegiate Inventor of the Year Award from the National Invention Center and the BF Goodrich Corporation He has served as the editor of a book titled “Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems” which is currently in its second edition and coeditor of “Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews

Lawrence E. Murr is Mr. & Mrs. MacIntosh Murchison Professor and Chairman of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Ph.D. Program Director in the Materials Research & Technology Institute at The University of Texas at El Paso.  Dr. Murr received his B.Sc. in physical science from Albright College, and his B.S.E.E. in electronics, his M.S. in engineering mechanics, and his Ph.D. in solid-state science, all from the Pennsylvania State University.  Dr. Murr has taught at the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Southern California, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology.  He was Director of the John D. Sullivan Center for In-Situ Mining Research, President of the New Mexico Tech Research Foundation, and Professor and Head of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.  He was a past Chairman of the New Mexico Joint Center for Materials Science and served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research and Director of the Office of Academic and Research Programs at the Oregon Graduate Institute, where he was also Professor of Materials Science and Engineering.  Dr. Murr has published 20 books, over 700 scientific and technical articles in a wide range of research areas in materials science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, manufacturing science and engineering (especially rapid prototype/layered manufacturing), and biological sciences and engineering roughly half with undergraduate and graduate student researchers.  During more than 45 years of university teaching, Professor Murr has also directed 64 M.S. theses and 32 Ph.D. dissertations.  Recent honors include the 2001 Buehler Technical Paper Merit Award for Excellence (IMS), the TMS 2007 Educator Award, the 2007 John S. Rinehart Award (a TMS Symposium Award for global leadership in shock and high-strain-rate phenomena), and the 2008 Henry Clifton Sorby Award presented by the International Metallographic Society (IMS) for recognition of lifetime achievement in the field of metallurgy.  Dr. Murr has more than 40 years of experience in ballistic and high-strain/high-strain-rate research and research involving imaging technologies, especially electron microscopy.  In 2009, Professor Murr received the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award from ASM International.  Dr. Murr was also awarded a Lee Hsun Research Award by the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR-CAS) “in recognition of past accomplishments in materials science and technology” (2009-2010).  In 2010, Professor Murr was honored as a Visiting Professor for Senior International Scientists by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) for the Institute of Metal Research (IMR) of the Shenyang National Laboratory (SYNL) for Materials Science.  Also in 2010, Professor Murr was appointed as the Guest Professor of Harbin Engineering University.  Professor Murr was chosen for a Piper Professor of 2010 Award for “Outstanding scholarly achievements and superior teaching at the college level”, a Texas higher education program of the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.  Professor Murr is also a Fellow of ASM International and a licensed professional engineer.  He holds 3 patents and has 1 pending.

Currently we are also working on oral delivery of vaccines, proteins and peptides. The strategy is to prepare sustained release nanosphere/microsphere formulations which are enteric coated so as to prevent degradation in the stomach. We have recently formulated and have conducted preliminary testing of the efficacy after oral vaccination in cancers such as melanoma, breast, ovarian and prostate. We are also evaluating the efficacy of viral and bacterial vaccines such as TB, Typhoid, Pneumococcal, Hepatitis B, Influenza, HIV and H1N1 vaccines. Recently, we have also been working on the delivery of vaccines and proteins via the transdermal route with the use of DermarollersR and microneedle technology. Several patents related to the research mentioned have been issued/filed and variousgrants have been awarded. We welcome collaborations in these and related areas of research.

QAAFI Director, Professor Robert Henry, is a graduate of the University of Queensland (B Sc (Hons)), Macquarie University (M Sc Hons)) and La Trobe University (Ph D). In 2000 Professor Henry was awarded a higher doctorate (D Sc) by UQ for his work on analysis of variation in plants.
Prior to being appointed QAAFI Director in May 2010, he was Director of the Centre for Plant Conservation Genetics at Southern Cross University, a Centre which he established in 1996. Other previous positions held by Professor Henry include Research Director of the Grain Foods Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) (until 2010) and Research Program Leader in the Queensland Agricultural Biotechnology Centre (until 1996).

Dr. Goswami is a joint professor of Biomedical, Industrial and Human Factors Engineering and Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. He directs Device Development Center, which has filed for more than half dozen invention disclosures, 3 of which are converted to utility patents. He also directs the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory which is located in the Miami Valley Hospital and serves as a collaborative model between the two colleges. He has ongoing funding support from USAF that enabled him to form a Center, Damage Tolerance and Probabilistic Life Prediction of Materials. Membership in this center includes faculty from the college as well as outside researchers from Air Force Base, Wiley, and other companies. Several researchers are full-time employee of this center. He formed Injury and Device Biomechanics Laboratory where medical students/residents, MS and PhD students work on their respective research projects.

Interactions between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) are important in a variety of cellular processes including adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Elucidating the factors that regulate and mediate these interactions represents a fundamental step in understanding how the dynamic reciprocity between cells and the ECM is mediated. The interaction of cells with the ECM is mediated by cell surface receptors that are capable of binding a variety of ECM components. The Discoidin Domain Receptors (DDR1 and DDR2) represent an additional pathway for communicating information about the extracellular environment to the cell. DDRs represent a novel group of receptor tyrosine kinases whose ligand is the ECM protein collagen. The focus of my research is to understand the functional role of this new class of ECM receptors, particularly DDR2, in cardiac development. The main focus currently is exploring the role of DDR2 in mediating ECM remodeling during atrioventricular cushion formation during early valve development. Questions we are interested in include how DDR2 interacts with the ECM, what effect this interaction has on the organization/structure of the ECM along with potential changes in DDR2 expression and distribution, and what information these receptors are capable of providing to the cell. We are also interested in examining the potential interactive role that DDR2 may have with integrins in regulating cardiac fibroblast response to the ECM.

There are three main research areas in the lab.The role of the Na+ or Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) in hypertension.We have cloned the NCX from the vasculature of salt sensitive and salt resistant rat and found that they differ by a single base mutation which predisposes the salt sensitive rat to hypertension. We are currently assessing the role that this mutation plays in mediating the effects of oxidative stressin hypertension. The use of antisense technology in treating latent TB.One of the most serious health problems affecting the worlds population is the presence of TB in the latent form where the mycobacterium can hibernate for years and then becomes active and infective. Using molecular beacon technology we are exploring the use of a delivery system which will deliver a molecular beacon antisense RNA against the MCE protein of the mycobacterium which will not only pinpoint the location of the mycobacterium but also eradicate the disease.The use of covalent modifications to Potentiate the effects of anti Parkinson and anticancer drugs.We are currently working on assessing the effects of different covalent modifications of existing drugs for the treatment of Parkinsons disease and cancer.Most modifications tested thus far Potentiate the effects of drugs up to four fold.

Cordoba, 1967. Salvador Ventura is Associate Prof. at the Dep. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and leader of the Protein Folding and Design group at the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed research and review papers on protein folding and proteomics, apart from several book chapters and patents. He got his Ph. D. in Biology at the UAB in 1998 and worked as postdoctoral fellow (1999-2001) at EMBL-Heidelberg under the supervision of Dr.Luis Serrano. He has been researcher at Harvard Medical School (USA) andKarolinska Institutet (Sweden) among other centres. He rejoined UAB as a Ramon y Cajal researcher in 2003. Dr. Ventura received the UAB 2008 Excellence Research Award. In 2009 the ICREA-Academia Award for excellence in Biological and Medical Sciences

 Research Interest :

His research interests are protein folding, misfolding and amyloid formation, with special focus on their role in conformational diseases such as Alzheimer, Diabetes or Mitochondrial and Prionic disorders. The final goal is to understand the mechanism of protein homeostasis in the cell and how nature maintains the delicate balance between functional and pathogenic amyloids to generate novel biological functions and protect against disease in humans.

Professor Martin is currently employed by the Fondation RTRA Nanosciences and is a Professor at Université Joseph Fourer. He has a continuing academic appointment at the University of Technology Sydney. His postdoctoral training was at Sydney University as the inaugural Medical Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow (1988-91) and at St Vincents Hospital (Senior Research Officer, 1991-96) Those positions led to research, published in The Lancet, that implicated macrophage ion channels in plaque rupture in the vasculature by describing a new explanation for the action of macrolide antibiotics in heart disease. That work extended to a study of ion channels on the cell nucleus, with a publication in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in collaboration with immunologists from St Vincent’s Hospital to detail the first isolation and characterisation of a chloride channel protein from the cell nucleus. He is now investigating the function of induced ion channel expression in cell-free systems for application in the field of nanobiotechnology. Those cell-free systems, recently published in Advanced Functional Materials, provide the basis for his conception of the MekaNo project to biomimetically produce energy to provide power for implanted devices. This MekaNo project commenced at the Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble after Don was awarded an internationally competitive Senior Chaire d’Excellence with funding from the Fondation RTRA Nanosciences (French government). The results of his research are published in more than 70 journal articles and have led to 4 patents. Prof Martin has recently edited a book on nanobiotechnology published by Springer.

Nicola M. Pugno was born in 1972 in Pavia, Italy and is currently married and has three babies. He holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Theoretical Physics, as well as a Ph.D. in Fracture Mechanics (Mathematical Foundations) and he is currently following a Ph.D in Biology (Learning Solid and Structural Mechanics from Spiders). He is a Professor of Solid and Structural Mechanics at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Founder and Head of the Laboratory of Bio-Inspired Nanomechanics “Giuseppe Maria Pugno” and Leader of the BioNanoMech Group@POLITO. He has published more than 150 international journal papers on Solid-, Structural-, Fracture-, Bio- and Nano-Mechanics in leading international journals (e.g. Nature Materials). He is a Reviewer for more than 60 int. j. and is in the Editorial Board of more than 10 int. j. NMP has received the 2011 Ideas Award (of 1 M€, where “Excellence is the only selection criterion”) from the European Research Council.

 Dr. Ueda is a professor at Chemical Resources Laboratory, TIT. As an antibody engineer, he developed a number of new immunoassay methods including Open sandwich immunoassay, which can noncompetitively detect small molecule antigens with higher sensitivity than by conventional competitive assay. Recently he extended this approach to develop “Quenchbodies”, whose fluorescence increases upon binding with antigen, which is now under commercialization as a quick detection device for narcotics. He has also created a novel protein-protein interaction assay based on the functional complementation of firefly luciferase mutants. For these accomplishments, he was awarded with a Promotion Award and a Research Award from the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan, and Nagase Foundation Award, 2014.

Dr Kanwar is an immunologist and molecular biochemist with an international reputation in investigating fundamental and applied molecular aspects of cancer and chronic inflammation. He did his PhD from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. Before joining Deakin University in 2006, he was a Senior Scientist/Senior Research Fellow in the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. John Forsythe received his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Queensland in 1998, and now leads the Tissue Engineering program within the Department of Materials Engineering Monash University. His major research interest is in the field of neural tissue engineering, particularly targeted at cell replacement therapies for Parkinson’s disease ,spinal cord injuries as well as neural interfaces for the bionic eye. Using nano-structured biomaterials, he has investigated novel methods of deploying stem cells and controlling inflammation to restore damaged neural pathways in the central nervous system. This has involved the engineering of nanofibre scaffolds, synthesis of light and thermally sensitive hydrogels, bioconjugates, polyelectrolyte multilayers and surface inititated polymerization. Born in 1977, Dr. Wang earned his B.S. in Polymer Science and Engineering with a second major in Applied Mathematics from East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST, Shanghai) in 1997. Continuing at ECUST, he completed his M.S. in Polymer Science and Engineering in 2000, where he studied synthesis and photophysical properties of novel conjugated polymers. Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. in Polymer Science from the University of Akron, Ohio in December 2003. His doctoral studies focused on chain dynamics of binary polymer blends using rheological and pulsed gradient NMR methods. In 2004, Dr. Wang joined Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) as a Research Fellow where he developed a series of novel crosslinkable and degradable polymeric systems for bone and nerve regeneration, and investigated the interactions between cells/tissues and polymer substrates/scaffolds. In 2007 Dr. Wang joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee as a tenure-track assistant professor. Dr. Wang was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2013. His research interests include biomaterials and tissue engineering, polymer chemistry, physics and rheology. Dr. Wang held a joint faculty appointment with the Biosciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2010-2013 and he is a core faculty member in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee. He obtained his degree in Biological Engineering in 2001 at the University of Minho and then concluded a sandwich PhD between the University of Southampton and the University of Minho.  During his research career he has participated in more than 25 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, more than 10 book chapters and given more than 20 oral presentations in international conferences and workshops. He is regularly part of the scientific advisory committee of international conferences of his research area. He is also co-founder of Biomode SA, a biotechnology company aiming to develop novel peptide nucleic acid fluorescence in situ hybridization  PNA  FISH  methods for the rapid detection of microorganisms.

diseases, including malaria. Our research focuses mainly on malaria drug discovery from natural products. Malaria continues to be a leading public health threat in Africa, and traditional medicine plays a key role in daily health care. We are working towards optimising the quality of plant products both as standardised phytomedicines or source of new drug candidates. Mapping drug resistance patterns through molecular epidemiology of malaria is part of our future goals. At the University of Buea, I am involved in teaching as an Instructor of Biochemistry in the Faculty of science. I have also been working closely with traditional healers through our organization (Nature & Health initiative), promoting Good Practice of Traditional Medicines and optimizing the repertoire of medicinal plants in Cameroon.  Research Interest :

 In my laboratory I supervise graduate students for Ph.D and for M.Sc. thesis and the recent ongoing projects related to these fields include:
 
 1.My lab is interested in structure - function studies of Thyrotropin (TSH); identifying protein regions which are determinants for hormone specific post-translational modifications and receptor binding/biologic activity, using site-directed mutagenesis, gene fusion and mutant cell lines. Using the molecular biology techniques I will try to study the role of oligosaccharides in the structure and function of thyrotropin (TSH). This may expand our understanding in the role of oligosaccharides in the hormone function and may lead to the development of new agonists and antagonists.

2.My lab is interested in identification of pre-apoptotic factors and characterization of their molecular pathways in human cancer cells. Recently we have concentrated in indole-derivatives, derivatives that are exist in cruciferous vegetables, natural antioxidants, medicinal plants and medicinal mushrooms. The main goal of these  studies is to elucidate such a novel and powerful natural compounds that can be used as an adjuvant nutritional therapy in preventing or a delaying the progression of cancer. The efficacy of these compounds will be tested in vitro using human cancer cells and in vivo using animal models. Moreover, the molecular mechanism of action of these factors will be studied in the cells using CHIP DNA analysis. These studies may lead to better understanding the biology of human cancer and may lead to the development of new strategies for prevention and treatment of human cancer.

3. The role of hormones in cancer development; studying the role of the indolic   melatonin hormone in prevention of breast and prostate cancer. Over the last 120 years, increased exposure of humans to light at night imposed a long photoperiod of about 16-18 hours of light all year long, thus contributing to a of 'loss-of-seasonality'.  Recent studies have linked disruption of normal circadian rhythms, via exposure to LAN, to the development of cancer.  The indolic hormone melatonin (MLT) , considered as the universal regulator of biological rhythms, was found to have oncostatic and anti-proliferative effects in both in vitro and in vivo studies.  Additionally, low levels of MLT may indirectly act to increase cancer risk by modulating the secretion of hormones implicated in carcinogenesis.  In the current research we will determine the impact of 'loss-of-seasonality' due to long term exposure to light at night, experienced by the majority of people in the industrialized world, on the development of breast and prostate cancer in animal models.  Moreover, the impact of MLT on the uptake of chemotherapeutic drugs (e.g. tamoxifen) administered during the day or night will be examined. Taken together, the results of our studies are expected to facilitate the formulation of guidelines regarding sensible use of illumination that will minimize the current risks associated with LAN without compromising our ability to work and live in a safe environment.
