Biography

Dr. N R Birasal earned his doctorate in Zoology in 1989 from Karnatak University Dharwad. The title of Ph.D thesis is Some studies on the changes in the freshwater ecosystem during the impoundment of the Kali river (Karnataka state, India). He has worked as Research Fellow in a project sponsored by Department of Environment, wildlife and forests, Government of India (Western Ghats Research Project No. 9/122/84. En.2) for three years (1984 to 1987).
He is currently Associate Professor in Zoology at KLE Society’s G H College Haveri. He has worked as Co-investigator in Minor Research Project (MRP) entitled ‘Survey of winter migratory birds visiting annually to Heggeri tank’ funded (2004 – 2006) by University Grants Commission (UGC). He has also completed the MRP as Principal investigator entitled ‘Limnological studies of Varada river water’ funded (2009 – 2011) by UGC. Presently he is working as Principal investigator in an MRP entitled ‘A survey of birds found in and around Haveri district’ financially supported by UGC.
He has 8 papers published in the international and national journals, 12 in the conference proceedings brought out by the organizers. He has written articles related to ornithology in popular magazines and leading news papers. He is the recipient of Best Researcher award by the Haveri district administration (2007).
He was nominated as member by the Government of Karnataka for the Environment Protection Act 1986 for conducting public inquiry at district level. Accordingly he has participated as member for 3 years from 07.03.1998.
He is the fellow member of International Science Congress Association. He is the Editor-in-chief of Indian Journal of Applied Environmental Sciences (IJAES). He is acting as honorary member on the editorial/advisory boards of a few national and international journals. He is also the member of reviewer boards of a few national and international journals.

Research Interest

River ecology, Hydrobiology of reservoirs, Impact of river impoundments, Biodiversity issues, Conservation efforts, Ornithology, Freshwater medusae,  Zooplankton, Birds studies on wetlands and Deccan plateau.
