Biography

Dr. Greg Mayer attended the University of Kentucky for his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and returned to Kentucky for his PhD. in Molecular Biology with Dr. Christer Hogstrand. Upon completion of his doctoral studies. Dr. Mayer accepted a NIEHS postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Miami with Dr. Pat Walsh. After his postdoctoral fellowship, Greg secured his first faculty position at the University of Maine in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Molecular Biology (presently the department of Molecular & Biomedical Sciences). In 2008 Dr. Mayer accepted his current faculty position at the Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University & Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. There, he focuses on how exogenous compounds can alter the ability of exposed organisms to repair DNA damage.

Research Interest

Dr. Mayer utilizes aquatic species such as zebrafish and killifish to investigate the effects of environmental contaminants on DNA damage and DNA repair. Currently, he is investigating how environmental estrogens modulate an organisms ability to repair DNA damage caused by ubiquitous environmental carcinogens. Additionally, Dr. Mayer is interested in how organisms adapt and/or acclimate to deal with environmental stress.
