Research Interest

Research takes on a translational approach with human exercise and diet interventions, coupled with in vitro endothelial cell studies, to understand the physiological mechanisms connecting inflammation, oxidative stress, through NADPH oxidase, with endothelial cell responses and EPC number, phenotype, activation, and migration. Increased physical activity increases the blood flow through active muscle tissue and blood vessels, alters adipocyte signaling, and causes adaptations in the endothelial function and regulation. These improvements in endothelial function with exercise training may depend on a combination of eNOS upregulation, NADPH oxidase downregulation,as well as circulating and resident EPC phenotype/activation and may have different effects on various tissue beds in the body.
