    Jimmy Efird holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health and as Epidemiologist/Chief Statistician (Leader, Shared Resources) in the Center for Health Disparities Research under the direction of Dr. Hope Landrine. He also serves as Director of Epidemiology and Outcomes Research for the ECU Heart Institute and is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. Prior to joining ECU, Dr. Efird was Director of the Biostatistics Facility at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (Honolulu, Hawaii) and an Associate Member of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.     BIOGRAPHY

    Biography :
    Vicente Notario graduated with a B.Sc. degree from the University of Salamanca, Spain, in 1974, and received his Ph.D. in Biology from the same institution in 1977. After completing post-doctoral training in the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Cambridge, England, and the U.S. National Cancer Institute, he joined the Department of Biochemistry at the Georgetown University Medical Center (G.U.M.C.) as a Research Assistant Professor, in 1986. Currently, Dr. Notario is Professor in the Departments of Radiation Medicine and of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology. He is also Director of the Division of Radiation Research in the Department of Radiation Medicine. Dr. Notario has been Leader of the Radiation Biology & DNA Repair Program and the Molecular Targets & Therapeutic Resistance Program of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, at the G.U.M.C. For over twenty years. His laboratory has focused on understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms of cancer initiation and progression as well as those involved in the acquisition of resistance to anti-cancer therapy, with emphasis on pathways that may be exploited to improve the treatment of metastatic cancers and to sensitize human tumors to chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapies. Dr. Notario has authored more than 135 publications. The quality and clinical significance of Dr. Notario’s contributions have been recognized and, consequently, continuously funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute since 1986. Dr. Notario has also received international recognition in the form of numerous invitations to speak at specialized meetings and to become a member of the Editorial Boards of journals such as Cancer Research, The International Journal of Oncology, Current Cancer Therapy Reviews, The Open Cancer Journal, The Journal of Cell Death, The World Journal of Clinical Oncology, and others. Dr. Notario’s expertise in Experimental Molecular Carcinogenesis has been recognized also through invitations to participate in U.S. and international scientific review and advisory committees, such as those for the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the American Association for Cancer Research, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Israel Science Foundation, the Italian National Center for Rare Diseases, the Italian Association for Research on Cancer, and the Department of Education and Science of Spain. In addition, Dr. Notario has been invited to act as an ad hoc expert reviewer for over 50 specialized U.S. national and international scientific journals. His service to Georgetown University included terms in the G.U.M.C. Research Committee and various faculty search committees, the Medical School Admissions Committee and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Executive Committee, and is currently serving as Chairman of the Georgetown Institutional Biosafety Committee.     Dr Shirwan is Dr Michael and Joan Hamilton Endowed Chair in Autoimmune Disease Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and the Director of the Molecular Immunomodulation Program at the Institute for Cellular Therapeutics. He conducted his graduate studies at the University of California in Santa Barbara CA and postdoctoral studies at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena CA. He joined the University of Louisville in 1998 after holding academic appointments at various institutions in the United States. Dr Shirwans research focuses on the modulation of immune system for the treatment of immunebased diseases with particular focus on type 1 diabetes transplantation and development of vaccines against infections and cancer. Dr Shirwan is widely published lectured at various national/international conferences served on various federal and nonprofit funding agencies and is on the Editorial Board of nine scientific journals He is a member of several national and international societies and recipient of various awards.     Biography :
    George Perry is dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimer disease research particularly for his work on oxidative metabolism. Perry received his bachelors of arts degree in zoology with high honors from University of California Santa Barbara.  After graduation, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and obtained his Ph.D. in marine biology under David Epel in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Drs. Bill Brinkley and Joseph Bryan at Baylor College of Medicine where he laid the foundation for his observations of abnormalities in cell structures. In 1982, Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University, where he currently holds an adjunct appointment.     BIOGRAPHY

Farghaly is a physician/scientist, and faculty member of the Medical College of Cornell University and The New York Presbyterian Hospital /Cornell University Medical Center, New York, NY, USA.     Dr. Xinghua Pan has been a research faculty and project leader at Yale School of Medicine since 2004 with a research focus on the development of novel technologies for genome-wide functional studies for single cells. His projects have been supported by NIH grants, a Connecticut stem cell grant, and other foundations. From 2000 to 2004, he worked as a Research Scientist and Enzymatic Leader at Molecular Staging Inc., and built up a whole-genome-amplification (WGA) kit REPLIg with Dr. Roger Lasken using multiple displacement amplification (MDA) technology, which is currently sold world-wide and is recognized as a top WGA product. Prior to this position, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Sherman Weissman at Yale University, and developed an approach for unconditionally globally scanning of DNA mutations. Dr. Pan is also an invited reviewer for international journals including Hereditas (“Yichuan” in PubMed), Molecular Ecology Resources, etc. He is on the Technical Program Committee of the 3rd/4th/5th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering and of organizers for several other conferences.     Professor Jan O.Gordeladze’s research interests encompass hormonal and mechano-stimulatory control of cellular differentiation and metabolism, and include G-protein and growth factor mediated differentiation of stem cells to chondrocytes and osteoblasts, differentiation of peripheral blood monocytes to osteoclasts, and differentiation of naive T-cells to Th-1, Th-2, and Th-17 cells. A particular interest is taken in the interaction between differentiating stem cells, Th-cells, and osteoclasts related to phenotype acquisition and stability in a “cell engineering” setting (e.g. in inflamed joints) where the interaction between microRNA and transcription factor (TF) regulatory hierarchies plays a major role. Other (related) research interests are osteoporosis, the immunosuppressive effect of stem cells, the osteolytic effect of cancer cells, and finally the interaction of differentiating osteoblasts with osteoclasts in the engineering of osteoblasts in scaffolds used for bone replacement in general.     Dr. Ming Pei is an Associate Professor and a Director of Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Department of Orthopaedics, West Virginia University. He also holds an Adjunct Position in Exercise Physiology and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering in West Virginia University. He spent three years as a Postdoctoral Associate in Harvard – M.I.T. Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) focusing on Bioreactor and Cartilage Tissue Engineering Projects, and three years as a Research Fellow in Department of Orthopaedics, Brown University focusing on Stem Cell Projects. He received his MD from Xuzhou Medical College, China in 1991, MS from Fudan University, China in 1996, and PhD from Beijing University, China in 1999. He is an Active Member of Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS, since 2002), Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS, since 2002), Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI, since 2006), and International Society of Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). He serves as a reviewer for about 20 journals and 8 grant agencies and Annual ORS meeting abstract. He also serves in Editorial Board for seven journals.     Research Interest :
    Our long-term goal is to understand mechanisms of self-renewal and multilineage differentiation properties of ESCs for their optimal growth, expansion and application in cell-based therapies. Our research focus is to dissect mechanism of action of the key stem cell factors Nanog and Oct4 in embryonic stem cells (ESCs). We have pioneered proteomics approaches to study pluripotency protein complexes in mouse ESCs. Specifically, we have established an in vivo biotinylation strategy for affinity purification of protein complexes and for chromatin immunoprecipitation, which have led to establishment of protein-protein and protein-DNA interaction networks in mouse ESCs. These studies have also led us to the discovery of a number of novel pluripotency transcription factors as well as epigenetic regulators that are important for stem cell maintenance. We are now studying a number of such novel self-renewal regulators (both genetic and epigenetic factors) for their roles in early development, stem cell pluripotency and somatic cell reprogramming.     Noah Isakov is a Professor of Immunology and Chair of The Shraga Segal Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Health Sciences Ben Gurion University of the Negev Beer Sheva Israel.
